Cordón del Plata, or Silver range, is the name of a mountain range located in the Central Andes of Mendoza. Its steep mountains, concentrated in few miles, and the mountain activity of the area create a disctintive "alpine" ambient.
During the winter the peaks and valleys of Cordón del Plata are covered by snow, in an ideal environment for cross-country skiing.
El Plata mountain, with 6000 m, is the highest in the area.
Itinerary
08 hs: Departure from Mendoza city, in 4x4 vehicle (Land Rover Defender). We ride for about two hours (90 km). As we ride towards the West we see vineyards and wineries, an oil refinery and the hills of the pre Andes (Precordillera). We share coffee, tea or "mate (our local infusion) in the track, as we talk about the wildlife of the region.
We hit a dirt mountain road, that climbs to 2,900 mt in the "Vallecitos" area. Our base is San Bernardo, a nice mountain hut, reaconditioned as a comfortable lodge. We get our gear, make last minute adjustments and start skiing up the slopes!
10.30 - 11:00 hs: We ski or do snowshoeing in the mountains "Andresito" or "Lomas Blancas", or in the "Estudiante" valley.
13:30 hs: We share a lunch (sandwiches, fruit, chocolate, ceral bars, juice or mineral water), before the descent. Then we ski down to the San Bernardo refuge, wher we have a hot chocolate or coffee before getting in the track again.
18 hs: Transfer to Mendoza, end of the program.
